“Now, are you trying to get me arrested?” Johann hissed across the bar.

A man with close-cropped hair he’d never met before leered over at him in the middle of the busiest period of the day. He jostled for position as people yelled for beer across the bar. It had grown so busy a couple of other students had been drafted part-time to handle the demand for business at Bierkeller’s.

“I didn’t ask you to question me, comrade. I’ve already told you that I wanted Leningrad and you better hurry up. We’re working on a schedule and we don’t need any big nosed student ruining it. Now hurry up.”

Johann clenched his teeth. “Hurry up with what?”

“Leningrad, you shit. Leningrad. Leningrad. Leningrad.”

Johann smirked at the communist who looked like his face had been flattened with an iron. “Then why didn’t you say that? There’s no need to shout.”

He didn’t wait for the communist’s retort and went into the back room. Johann eased the case down from the top shelf by way of a stepladder and cradled it under his arm. When he came out into the bar again, he saw the communist waiting off to the side. He slipped the briefcase into the communist’s hand, before he rushed off at full pace into the crowd.

Johann prayed this wouldn’t come back to him as he continued serving beer throughout the rush hour. Workers and students grew drunker and rowdier as the beer flowed. By the time the hours passed and people managed to stumble home to their wives, Johann was worried sick about what could have possibly happened with those guns.

Ingolf Kracht muttered under his breath and walked at a swift pace through the streets, back into the historic city centre. Maxvorstadt had been one of the first areas to expand beyond the original city fortifications. It had become a hotbed for communist activity, with the SA keeping most of their operations crammed into the centre, and towards the poorer working class areas.

Ingolf wanted to rush back to the bar and slap Johann across the face. He had lost vital seconds that could prove crucial, and all because he wanted to play some silly games. Alex would hear about this when he returned with his report. He started to dart into narrower and narrower streets until he came to the back door of a restaurant that had closed during the years of hyperinflation.

He checked to see if anyone had followed him, before unveiling the weapons in the briefcase. He’d already scouted his target and knew he wouldn’t have time to mess around. He chose the Mauser C96, used heavily during the First World War, and inserted the bullets from his pockets.

Captain Yorck’s right hand man Hans Unger had been a thorn in their side for a long time. Tonight he would pay for conducting the raids on a number of communist safe houses. He knew the man would come stumbling through the street that led under the old town hall, just off the Marienplatz. From there, he could get a clear shot.
